Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Plume 80 Meters High Above Peak

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Saturday (1/10/2026) at 05:01 AM Western Indonesian Time. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 47 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 80 meters above the peak (3,756 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast and east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 126 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 10, 2026, from 18:00-23:59 WIB showed 32 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 72-168 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-5 mm and durations of 52-87 seconds, and 4 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-6 millimeters and durations of 51-55 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not conduct activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for hot cloud expansion and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 144 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most, with 84 occurrences.
