Prevalence of Food Consumption Inadequacy in Malang Increased by 1.47% in the Last 5 Years

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the prevalence of undernourishment (Prevalence of Undernourishment/PoU) in Malang Regency, East Java, was 9.42% in 2024.

This figure increased by 0.95% from the previous year's 8.47%, and by 1.47% in the last 5 years.

Indonesia's average PoU was 8.27% in 2024. This means that the PoU in Malang Regency is higher than the national average.

According to the National Food Agency (Bapanas), PoU is a condition where a person regularly consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needed for a normal, active, and healthy life.

This indicator can be used as a tool to assess food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that the population in Malang Regency who consume food but have insufficient energy needs does not reach 9.42% of the total population.

Compared to 37 other regencies/cities in East Java Province, Malang Regency's PoU ranks 22nd. The region with the lowest PoU (top rank) is Surabaya City (2.37%), and the highest (last rank) is Situbondo Regency (17.35%).
