Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again in the Early Hours of Today, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 700 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 04:54 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 11 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 700 meters above the peak (2,123 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 1.8 millimeters and a duration of 44 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 20, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 64 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.8-34.4 millimeters and durations of 25-94 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 66 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 1.3-15.2 millimeters and durations of 25-82 seconds, and 8 deep volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 1.1-15.5 millimeters, s-p 0.6-0.9 seconds, and durations of 11-19 seconds.

The PVMBG advises residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,309 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,053 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 43 times.
