Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Wednesday Night, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 8:27 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 16 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 300 meters above the peak (1,884 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 37 millimeters and a duration of 220 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 19, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 648 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 38 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-14.8 millimeters and durations of 7-11 seconds, and 10 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-29.6 millimeters, s-p 0.8-1.7 seconds, and durations of 9-15 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 4-kilometer radius in the Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,204 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (528 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 219 times.
