Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, August 22, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (8/22/2025) at 17:03 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 8 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 300 meters above the peak or 1,723 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with moderate intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 16.2 millimeters and a duration of 37 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 22, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 38 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.8-18.8 millimeters and durations of 33-64 seconds.

Subsequently, 28 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.6-5.5 millimeters and durations of 26-39 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.5 millimeters s-p unobserved and a duration of 68 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, and to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,737 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,299 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 244 times.
