Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Saturday, January 31, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Saturday (January 31, 2026) at 18:21 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 34 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 31, 2026, from 12:00-18:00 WIB showed 17 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 61-104 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 9 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 37-76 seconds, as well as 1 harmonic earthquake with an amplitude of 4 millimeters and a duration of 117 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 411 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 216 occurrences.
