Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Plume About 200 Meters High

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) at 6:46 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 4 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 200 meters above the peak or 1,623 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity to the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14 millimeters and a duration of 47 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 5, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 19 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 11.7-30.7 millimeters and durations of 41-54 seconds. Additionally, there were 35 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.2-9.3 millimeters and durations of 27-41 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, to be aware of the potential danger threats from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,473 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,195 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 209 times.
