Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height Around 300 Meters

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday (2/2/2026) at 05.23 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 300 meters above the peak (3,976 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 110 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Siaga/Alert). Seismic observations on February 2, 2026, from 18.00-23.59 WIB showed 26 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 71-132 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-6 millimeters and durations of 63-68 seconds, as well as 1 harmonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2 millimeters and a duration of 385 seconds.

PVMBG urges against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, the public should avoid activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for hot clouds and lava flows to extend up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 426 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 225 occurrences.
