Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Monday, July 8, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday, July 8, 2024, at 12:32 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 116 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 8, 2024, from 06:00 to 12:00 WIB showed 42 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 51-178 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 rockfall event with an amplitude of 8 mm and a duration of 77 seconds, and 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-25 millimeters, S-P 25-31 seconds, and durations of 53-77 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,518 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 671 recorded events.
