Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts on Monday Afternoon, Status is Alert

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (5/1/2026) at 15:43 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 500 meters above the peak (1,923 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was white to gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28.8 millimeters and a duration of 45 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on January 5, 2026, from 00:00-23:59 WITA showed 110 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 9.4-31.6 millimeters and durations of 46-238 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.4-3.4 mm and durations of 35-54 seconds, and 167 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.1-13.6 millimeters and durations of 18-54 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/hikers/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, as well as the south-southeast and west sectors up to 2.5 kilometers from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 66 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (37 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 1 time.
