Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupted on Wednesday Afternoon, Activity Level at Alert Status

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday (September 24, 2025) at 15:24 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 3 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 600 meters above the peak (2,023 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 29.9 millimeters and a duration of 30 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 24, 2025, from 06:00-12:00 WITA showed 73 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11.8-33.8 millimeters and durations of 190-256 seconds. Furthermore, there were 68 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.9-8.9 millimeters and durations of 28-35 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/hikers/tourists, not to enter and not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, and to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and hot clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,305 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,481 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 280 times.
