Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Eruption Height 6,000 Meters Above Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (August 18, 2025) at 5:12 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 6,000 meters above the peak or 7,584 meters above sea level.

The observed ash column was gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 18, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 3 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-47.3 millimeters and durations of 50-874 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 mm and a duration of 62 seconds, and 7 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 7.4-29.6 millimeters and durations of 31-59 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a 7-kilometer sectoral area to the West-North-Northeast from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,679 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,276 times) while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 466 times.
