This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a grim situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. This week, 17 countries recorded an increase in deaths, and four others recorded deaths, albeit in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Belize, Peru, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, January 27, 2022, amounted to 1,077, with a weekly growth exceeding 67.5 percent.
Honduras ranks first, with a 300 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded 32 deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported eight deaths.
Belize follows with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 175 percent. Yesterday's daily death toll in this country was recorded at 11. Peru recorded 942 deaths (up 108.41%), El Salvador saw a 108.33% increase in deaths, and Costa Rica recorded 67 deaths (up 67.5%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 15,113 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 18.94% compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 2,323 deaths (up 54.05%), Mexico recorded 1,832 deaths (up 50.78%), Colombia recorded 1,469 deaths (up 61.78%), and Argentina recorded 1,283 deaths (up 33.92%).
The total deaths in the Americas over the past seven days amounted to 25,075. This accounts for 43.42 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 57,747. The death toll in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 19,445 deaths.
