Indonesia's Under-five Mortality Rate by Province, Highest in Papua

According to the results of the 2020 Population Census Long Form from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the under-five mortality rate in Indonesia reached 19.83 per 1,000 live births.

This means that out of 1,000 children born alive, approximately 20 of them died before reaching the age of 5.

However, the under-five mortality rate varies greatly when viewed at the provincial level.

In Papua Province, the rate reached 49.04 per 1,000 live births, about 2.5 times higher than the national average.

Meanwhile, in DKI Jakarta, the rate was 12.02 per 1,000 live births, below the national average.

BPS also found that in 2020, most deaths of children under five in Indonesia were caused by non-communicable diseases (72.77%).

The next causes were accidents (3%), Covid-19 (2.42%), communicable diseases (1.44%), and others (20.37%).
