Causes of Neonatal and Post-Neonatal Infant Mortality in Indonesia 2024

According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), there were 33,131 infant and child deaths in Indonesia in 2024, a decrease compared to 2023, which recorded 34,266 deaths.

In 2024, most infant and child deaths occurred during the neonatal period (0-28 days old), totaling 26,657 deaths, or 80.46% of the total deaths.

During the neonatal period, the most common causes of death were respiratory and cardiovascular disorders.

These disorders also remained the primary cause of child deaths in the post-neonatal phase (29 days-11 months old).

The following are the detailed percentages of causes of neonatal and post-neonatal deaths in Indonesia in 2024, according to Kemenkes data:

Respiratory and cardiovascular disorders 

• Neonatal: 38.38%
• Post-neonatal: 32.73%

Low birth weight and prematurity

• Neonatal: 26.37%
• Post-neonatal: 22.47%

Infections

• Neonatal: 12.66%
• Post-neonatal: 10.80%

Congenital malformations, deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities

• Neonatal: 9.07%
• Post-neonatal: 7.77%

Complications of intrapartum events

• Neonatal: 6.07%
• Post-neonatal: 5.19%

Disorders related to length of gestation and fetal growth

• Neonatal: 1.14%
• Post-neonatal: 0.97%

Seizures and cerebral status disorders
