According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the global forest area reached 4.14 billion hectares in 2025.

However, forests located within protected areas only cover about 813 million hectares, or 20% of the total global forest area.

Based on the Convention on Biological Diversity, a protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.

In 2025, Asia had the largest proportion of forests within protected areas, reaching 26% of the total forest area in its region.

FAO also stated that during the period 1990-2025, the global area of forests within protected areas increased by 251 million hectares.

"The area of forest in legally protected areas increased in all regions between 1990 and 2025, it almost doubled in North and Central America, mainly because of increases reported by Canada and the United States of America," they said.
