Based on data from the Directorate General of Primary and Community Health of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), the total number of infant and under-five deaths, aged 0-59 months, in Indonesia reached 33,131 cases.
This figure consists of 31,393 infant deaths and 1,738 under-five deaths.
Kemenkes stated that most infant deaths occurred during the neonatal period, or 0-28 days. The following are the details broken down by age group:
- 0-7 days (early neonatal): 20,097 deaths
- 8-28 days (late neonatal): 6,560 deaths
- 0-28 days (total neonatal period): 26,657 deaths
- Total infants (0-11 months): 31,393 deaths
- Under-five children (1-4 years): 1,738 deaths.
The number of deaths in 2024 decreased compared to 2023, which recorded 34,266 deaths.
Although the trend of the infant mortality rate (IMR) in Indonesia has decreased, Kemenkes acknowledges that accelerated and sustained efforts are still needed to achieve the target of 16/1,000 live births by the end of 2024.
"Child health efforts need to be carried out with a promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative approach in an integrated, comprehensive, and sustainable manner," Kemenkes wrote in the Indonesia Health Profile 2024 report, quoted on Thursday (16/10/2025).
Kemenkes added that these efforts are implemented from the fetus in the womb until the child reaches 18 years of age. One of the goals of child health efforts is to ensure the continuity and quality of children's lives through reducing mortality rates, improving nutrition, and fulfilling minimum service standards for newborns, infants, and under-fives.
