Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are French Guiana, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Panama. The total deaths in these five countries for the week of December 12, 2021, were 102, representing a weekly growth of over 16.67 percent.
French Guiana recorded the highest increase in deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 100 percent. Worldometer recorded 4 deaths in this country, an increase from the 2 reported the previous week.
Ecuador follows with a 64.52 percent weekly increase in deaths. The country reported 51 deaths, compared to 31 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Paraguay saw a 50% increase in deaths, Uruguay reported 9 deaths (a 28.57% increase), and Panama reported 14 deaths (a 16.67% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 8,654 deaths. This represents a 12.24% increase compared to the previous week. Following the US, Mexico reported 1,471 deaths (a 14.12% increase), Brazil reported 1,279 deaths (a -6.64% decrease), Colombia reported 326 deaths (a -3.83% decrease), and Peru reported 324 deaths (a 12.11% increase).
The total deaths in the Americas over the past seven days were 12,876. This accounts for 25.72 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 50,053. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 11,796 deaths.
