According to Clean Technica, electric vehicle sales in China reached 2.41 million units in the first quarter of 2025.
During this period, the BYD Song was the best-selling electric vehicle in China, with sales of 117,145 units, or 4.9% of total domestic sales.
This figure combines sales of the BYD Song battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models.
Chinese brands also occupied the next positions, namely Geely Geome Xingyuan with sales of 89,215 units and Wuling Mini EV with 86,946 units.
Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y, an American brand, ranked fourth with sales of 81,889 units.
According to Clean Technica, under normal conditions, the Tesla Model Y has the potential to rank higher. However, under the current US-China trade war, Tesla may be disadvantaged by increasing anti-US sentiment in China.
"This will be a disruptive event, as Tesla has consistently been on the podium for electric vehicles in China since 2019," wrote Clean Technica in its report on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
