Mount Ibu Erupts Wednesday Morning, Status Raised to Highest Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 05:46 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 9 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate intensity towards the east and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 62 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 12, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 7 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 15-45 seconds.

Then, there were 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-3.5 millimeters and durations of 45-90 seconds, and 78 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 4-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,033 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (431 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 119 times.
