The Jakarta-Surabaya toll road is approximately 759 km long, consisting of 534 km already operational and 235 km still under construction (functional sections). The five functional toll road sections are: Pemalang-Batang (39 km) with 71.76% progress; Batang-Semarang (74 km) with 77% progress; Semarang-Solo (32 km) with 63% progress; Sragen-Ngawi (55 km), part of the 90 km Solo-Ngawi section; and Wilangan-Kertosono (37 km), part of the Ngawi-Kertosono section.
The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing claims that the 2018 homecoming route condition is better and more stable than the previous year because there are no more emergency roads. Despite this, several critical points remain due to ongoing construction work. However, a Plan B has been prepared, as seen in Kali Kenteng, namely the Salatiga-Kartasura section (32.24 km) which is 62.99% complete, with an operational target of October 2019.
The preparation of toll road sections and the preservation of national roads (including the North Coast, Central, and South Coast Java routes), totaling 1,405 km, provides alternative routes for homecoming travelers this year. Therefore, people do not solely rely on toll roads to reach their hometowns.
