Indonesia's Cheapest Taxi Fares in Southeast Asia

Conventional taxi fares in Indonesia are considered more expensive than online transportation services like Uber and Grab. However, compared to conventional taxi fares in other Southeast Asian countries, Indonesian taxi fares are still relatively cheap.

A study by iPrice indicates that conventional taxi fares in Indonesia are only US$2.3 for a short distance of 5 kilometers (KM), the same as in Malaysia. The highest fares are in Singapore, reaching three times the Indonesian rate. High base fares, distance, and time make taxi fares in Singapore very expensive.

Amidst the proliferation of online-based transportation, conventional taxis are gradually being abandoned by the public due to their perceived higher cost. However, for several reasons, this type of taxi remains a choice for some. Furthermore, ongoing debates surrounding the regulation of online transportation services allow conventional taxis to maintain a share of the urban transportation market in Indonesia.
