Smartphone manufacturers continuously innovate, releasing new series every year. So, when was the last time Indonesian consumers bought a new smartphone?

According to Populix's survey titled *Indonesia Mobile Phone Purchase Behavior*, the majority, or 36% of respondents in Indonesia, last purchased a smartphone 1-2 years ago.

Then, 28% of respondents last bought a smartphone less than a year ago, and 22% bought one approximately 2-3 years ago.

Another 8% of respondents last bought a smartphone 3-4 years ago. Only a small percentage of respondents last purchased the gadget 4-5 years ago or longer, and only 1% have never replaced their smartphone.

This survey also found that the main reason respondents replaced their smartphones was because their old devices no longer supported the latest operating system versions (38%).

Others bought new smartphones because the storage capacity of their old devices was full (33%), and they wanted a smartphone with the latest features (14%).

Populix conducted this online survey with 1,096 respondents from August 9-14, 2023. The majority of respondents were from Java (45%), followed by Sumatra (5%) and other islands (50%).

Respondents were dominated by young people aged 17-25 years (57%), and 26-35 years (28%). Based on their occupation, most respondents were employees (51%), followed by students (27%) and entrepreneurs (12%).
