Qatar 2022 World Cup: Japan Advances to the Round of 16 After Defeating Spain

Japan's national team, nicknamed the Blue Samurai, advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar after defeating Spain 2-1 in matchday 3.

This victory gave Japan an additional 3 points, bringing their total to 7 and securing top spot in Group E.

The Blue Samurai's success in overcoming the "Matador" team took place in the final group stage match at Khalifa International Stadium, Doha, Qatar, on Friday morning (December 2nd, 2022).

Initially, Spain took the lead with a goal in the 11th minute from Alvaro Morata's header, assisted by Cesar Azpilicueta. Japan then equalized at 1-1 in the 48th minute with a powerful shot from Ritsu Doan.

Shortly after, Japan scored again, with Ao Tanaka finding the back of the net, assisted by Kaoru Mitoma, beating Unai Simon in the Spanish goal. The score became 2-1, securing victory for the Blue Samurai.

Despite losing to Japan, Spain still progressed to the Round of 16. Spain and Germany both earned 4 points, but Spain advanced due to a superior goal difference.

Previously, Germany, a European football giant, was defeated by Japan 2-1 on matchday 1 of the Group E stage.

In another Group E match, Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2. However, the team nicknamed "Der Panzer" failed to qualify for the Round of 16, along with Costa Rica, who were also eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
