Securing 13.57% of DPR RI Seats, Gerindra Still Doesn't Meet the Requirements to Nominate a Presidential Candidate for the 2024 Election

The Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) secured the third-largest number of seats in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in the 2019 general election.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the party founded and chaired by Prabowo Subianto obtained 78 seats (13.57%) out of a total of 575 DPR RI seats for the 2019-2024 period. This was the third-largest number of seats, after PDI Perjuangan with 22.26% and Golkar with 14.78%.

With this number of seats, the Gerindra Party had to form a coalition with other parties to meet the presidential nomination threshold (Presidential Threshold) of at least 20% of the total DPR RI seats in the 2019 election.

In the 2019 election, the Gerindra Party received 12.57% of the national valid votes. Despite being the second-largest vote-getter, Gerindra was not entitled to nominate a presidential candidate in the 2024 election.

Based on both the number of DPR RI seats and the national valid votes, the Gerindra Party did not meet the requirements mandated by Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections, Article 222, which reads as follows:

"Presidential candidates are nominated by a Political Party or a Coalition of Political Parties participating in the Election that meets the requirements of obtaining at least 20% (twenty percent) of the total number of DPR seats or obtaining 25% (twenty-five percent) of the national valid votes in the previous DPR election."
