Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, March 22, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday (March 22, 2026) at 10:42 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 54 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed is around None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No eruption visuals were observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 158 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 22, 2026, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB showed 17 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 18-22 millimeters and durations of 89-127 seconds.

Then, 3 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 59-105 seconds, as well as 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-16 millimeters, s-p intervals of 16-84 seconds, and durations of 70-187 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,117 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 603 events.
