Several factors influence students' choices of presidential candidates (capres).
According to the Praxis survey, open debates were the most influential campaign method for the majority of student respondents, with a proportion of 69.93%.
"This finding indicates that young voters have a high level of political awareness," said Sofyan Herbowo, Director of Public Affairs at Praxis Indonesia, in a press release on Monday (22/1/2024).
According to Sofyan, students tend to consider candidates' capacity, programs, and performance quality in debates when making their choices, rather than pragmatic aspects such as the candidates' physical appearance and other factors.
Based on these findings, Sofyan stated that political debates are not merely forums for policy discussions but also opportunities for candidates to garner the votes of young voters.
"Therefore, it is important for candidates to understand the dynamics of young voters, adapt their campaign strategies, and utilize political debates as a primary tool in building credibility and support," said Sofyan.
Other campaign activities that influenced students' choices include seminars and education (44.16%), open campaigns/speeches (43.06%), and publicity stunts and creative campaigns (40.86%).
Some students were also more influenced by social media campaigns (27.67%), or the establishment of campaign offices, recruitment and training of volunteers, and the holding of community events (20.48%).
Others were influenced by campaigns involving public activities/mass gatherings (17.18%), fundraising (13.59%), door-to-door campaigns (8.99%), media advertising (7.39%), and political endorsements (6.69%).
This survey was conducted from January 1-8, 2024, with 1,001 student respondents aged 16-25 in 34 Indonesian provinces.
The survey sampling used non-probability sampling, chain-referral sampling, and snowball sampling techniques, with a margin of error below 3% at a 98% confidence level.
Praxis also collaborated with the Election Corner (EC) Fisipol UGM to examine the quantitative findings by conducting qualitative research on January 15, 2024.
This Focus Group Discussion (FGD) research involved four academics and student representatives from Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Gadah Mada (UGM), Universitas Mulawarman (Unmul), and Universitas Nusa Cendana (Undana).
