Basic Needs to Corruption: Pressing Issues Indonesian Leaders Must Address

Research by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) reveals several pressing issues that the public believes national leaders must address within the next five years.

The most urgent issue, cited by 28.1% of respondents, is controlling the prices of basic necessities.

Second, job creation or unemployment reduction, selected by 21.4% of respondents. Third, corruption eradication at 12.1%, followed by poverty reduction at 11%.

"But as we often hear, presidential candidates haven't spoken much specifically about these issues, especially regarding corruption eradication," said Executive Director Djayadi Hanan in a virtual conference presentation on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

Here are the top 10 urgent issues respondents believe national leaders should address in the next five years:

* Controlling the prices of basic necessities: 28.1%
* Creating jobs/reducing unemployment: 21.4%
* Corruption eradication: 12.1%
* Poverty reduction: 11%
* Developing infrastructure (roads, bridges, dams, etc.): 5.1%
* Security/order: 3.6%
* Advancing the agricultural sector: 3.4%
* Boosting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs): 2.5%
* Income equality: 1.8%
* Foreign debt: 1.1%

This LSI survey involved 1,220 respondents aged 17 and above or who are married. The sample was selected using multistage random sampling.

Data collection was conducted from August 3-9, 2023, using face-to-face interviews with professional interviewers. The survey has a margin of error of approximately 2.9% and a 95% confidence level.
