A survey by the Indonesian Political Indicator Institute shows that candidate pair number 2, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, achieved an electability of 56.2% in East Java in January 2024.
This achievement surpasses other candidate pairs. However, the research team provided a slight note regarding Prabowo-Gibran's results.
“Although Mr. Prabowo in East Java has exceeded 50%, nationally Mr. Prabowo has not reached 50%. Therefore, the Presidential Election will have to be conducted in two rounds,” said Burhanudin Muhtadi, Executive Director of Indikator Politik, in his online survey presentation on Thursday (1/2/2024).
Below them, candidate pair number 3, Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD, garnered 19.9% of the vote in East Java. Followed by candidate pair number 1, Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, with 15.7%.
The remaining 8.2% of respondents in East Java chose "don't know" or "didn't answer."
The survey also recorded the reasons respondents chose their candidate pair. A recorded 26.3% of Prabowo-Gibran's supporters chose the pair because of their firm and authoritative stance.
“When we cross-referenced that [the reason of firmness], most of it clustered around Prabowo Subianto. So, if we talk about firmness and authority, the association is positive for Prabowo,” said Burhanudin.
Burhanudin continued, the most common reason for choosing Ganjar-Mahfud in East Java was their consideration for the people. This was chosen by 31% of respondents from their total voters.
“As for Mr. Anies, his strength lies in his intelligence and broad perspective. So, people who choose a presidential candidate because of intelligence (14.5%) generally choose Mr. Anies,” he said.
This survey involved 810 respondents aged 17 years and older or who were married. The survey sample was taken using a multistage random sampling method from all Indonesian citizens in East Java Province.
Data collection was conducted from January 14-19, 2024, using face-to-face interview methods. The survey's margin of error is 3.5% with a 95% confidence level.
