SMRC: Residents Report Frequent Extortion Cases at the Prosecutor's Office

A Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) survey reveals that 23% of respondents reported frequently hearing about extortion by prosecution officials against suspects during case handling. This breaks down to 2% reporting very frequent instances and 21% reporting frequent instances.

However, a larger percentage reported hearing about such instances infrequently. 29% of respondents said they rarely heard of it, and 9% said they very rarely heard of extortion by prosecution officials against suspects during case handling.

Meanwhile, 21% of respondents reported never hearing about extortion by prosecution officials. Furthermore, 18% of respondents chose not to answer or stated they did not know about any extortion.

Besides extortion, respondents also frequently acknowledged hearing about case brokerage practices in the prosecutor's office. These two issues are the reasons for the relatively low level of trust in the prosecutor's office. Only 59% of respondents reported having very high or sufficient trust in the prosecutor's office.

The survey was conducted from July 31 to August 2, 2021, involving 1,000 randomly selected respondents. The margin of error for this survey is estimated to be approximately ±3.2% at a 95% confidence level.
