The 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres) is drawing closer, less than a year away. The competition among presidential candidates (capres) and vice-presidential candidates (cawapres) is intensifying.

However, what are the desired characteristics of presidential and vice-presidential candidates among Indonesian citizens?

According to a survey by Kurious-Katadata Insight Center (KIC), the majority, or 69.6% of Indonesian respondents, expect presidential and vice-presidential candidates to be relatable to the people.

Many respondents also hope that the next Indonesian leader will be intelligent/smart (65.7%).

Furthermore, desired characteristics of presidential and vice-presidential candidates include a proven track record (63.8%), decisiveness (50.1%), religiosity (30.7%), and politeness (16.8%).

Some respondents also hope for a leader from a regional background, but this constitutes a very small percentage (3.2%).

The survey also shows a number of priority issues that the new government and DPR (House of Representatives) must address. These include economic growth (68.7%), unemployment (54.3%), inflation (29.8%), fuel price stability (25.5%), and digital industry readiness (21.7%).

According to the Kurious-KIC survey, the majority of Indonesian citizens are willing to participate in the 2024 election, with a participation rate of 65.8%.

Kurious-KIC conducted this survey among 612 people spread across various regions of Indonesia, with a 50% male and 50% female respondent proportion.

More than half of the respondents are from Java Island excluding Jakarta (59%), followed by Jakarta (18.5%), and Sumatra (11.3%). Respondents from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua represent smaller proportions (between 0.3%-3.9%).

Most respondents are aged between 35-44 years old (31.5%), followed by the 25-34 year old group (29.9%) and the 45-54 year old group (23%).

The survey was conducted from February 3-12, 2023, using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method, with a margin of error of approximately 3.96% and a 95% confidence level.
