Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Tuesday, March 24, 2026)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (March 24, 2026) at 09.46 WIT. In the past week, Mount Ibu has erupted 6 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 400 meters above the peak (1,725 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 24 millimeters and a duration of 32 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Warning). Volcanic earthquake observations on March 24, 2026 from 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 106 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 30-76 seconds.

Then, 3 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-56 seconds as well as 7 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 8-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 53-193 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,132 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (609 eruptions) while Mount Ibu erupted 451 times.
