High Number of Cross-Reports Cited as Main Reason for Supporting the Revision of the ITE Law

More than half of the Indonesian public approves of the revision of the Law on Information and Electronic Transactions (RUU ITE). This is reflected in the responses of 56.3% of respondents in a Charta Politika survey.

Of this number, 30.2% of respondents agree with the revision of the ITE Law due to numerous cases of individuals reporting each other. Another 28.1% of respondents believe that many articles in the ITE Law are ambiguous and detrimental to the public online.

The ITE Law is also considered to make people uncomfortable spreading information on the internet due to the fear of violating regulations, as stated by 20.6% of respondents. Meanwhile, 9.3% of respondents believe that the ITE Law restricts the public's ability to criticize the government.

Charta Politika conducted a national survey of 1,200 respondents across Indonesia. Data collection was conducted through telephone interviews from March 20-24, 2021. The survey has a margin of error of ±2.83% with a 95% confidence level.
