50th Anniversary HUT, History of PDI-P Vote Acquisition in the 1977-2019 Elections

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) will celebrate its 50th anniversary on January 10, 2022. PDIP was the winning party in the 2019 General Election, securing 19.33% of the national valid votes.

The name PDIP first appeared as a contender in the 1999 General Election, obtaining 33.75% of the national valid votes. In this election, there was also the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) under the leadership of Budi Hardjono, which only achieved 0.61% of the national valid votes.

The PDI was founded on January 10, 1973, from the merger of several political parties: the Indonesian National Party (PNI), the People's Deliberation Party (Partai Murba), and the Indonesian Christian Party (Parkindo).

The PDI regularly participated in General Elections since 1977. However, starting in 1996, the PDI experienced a split, resulting in two leaderships: the PDI supported by the New Order government, led by Soerjadi, and the PDI led by Megawati Soekarno Putri.

Due to this split, the PDI only received 2.99% of the vote in the 1997 General Election, as shown in the graph.

Then, in the 1999 General Election, the PDIP led by Megawati won the most votes. The PDIP grew stronger, winning the elections twice in a row in 2014 and 2019.

Currently, the PDIP is also the only political party that has secured a ticket to nominate a presidential candidate without needing a coalition. This is because the PDIP has met the presidential threshold, achieving at least 20% of the seats in the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in the 2019 General Election.
