Numerous Greenflation Issues Surface After Vice Presidential Debate: What is the Public Sentiment?

The issue of "greenflation" has been widely discussed by netizens after the term was used by Gibran Rakabuming Raka during the fourth presidential debate on Sunday (21/1/2024).

In one of the debate sessions, Gibran questioned Mahfud MD on how to overcome "greenflation." However, the moderator asked Gibran to explain the definition of the term.

"I didn't explain this (the term 'greenflation') earlier because he (Mahfud) is a professor. Okay, 'greenflation' is simply green inflation," said Gibran.

This statement then invited a lot of negative sentiment from Twitter/X users.

Social media analytics firm Drone Emprit analyzed conversations about "greenflation" on Twitter during the period of January 21-24, 2024.

As a result, there were 17,897 mentions related to Gibran and "greenflation" on Twitter, and 72% of them had negative connotations.

"The majority of discussions (on Twitter) had a critical tone or disagreed with how this issue was discussed or responded to," said Drone Emprit Founder Ismail Fahmi on his personal Twitter account, Thursday (25/1/2024).

Ismail also found that 15% of the conversations were positive, and 13% were neutral regarding the topic.

"(Positive sentiment) indicates that there were a number of discussions supporting the views or approaches towards the issue of 'greenflation'," said Ismail.
