Fear of Stigma: Why Residents Hesitate to Report COVID-19 Exposure

Fear of stigmatization is the main reason why people do not report being infected with Covid-19. A Charta Politika survey shows that 41.7% of respondents fear being ostracized by relatives or their community.

Other reasons include fear of high medical costs (20.8%), a belief that life and death are in God's hands (12.5%), uncertainty about what to do after a positive Covid-19 diagnosis (12.5%), and complicated bureaucracy (8.3%).

The survey, titled "National Survey Release: Evaluation of Policies, Public Activities, and Political Map, First Quarter 2021," was conducted from January 26-29 and February 24-28, 2021, using telephone interviews. A total of 1,200 respondents, proportionally representing each province, participated. The method used was random sampling with a 95% confidence level.
