Results from an Australian research firm, Roy Morgan, show that Prabowo Subianto is the leading presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election simulation, with 43% of the vote as of December 2023.
This figure is up 13% since the firm's September 2023 survey. The research team suggests Prabowo is on the verge of winning the presidential election in the first round. However, they also indicate that the election may still proceed to a second round, as no candidate has secured more than 50% of the vote.
Prabowo's achievement surpasses his two competitors: Ganjar Pranowo, at 30% (down 8% from the previous survey), and Anies Baswedan, at 24% (down 1% from the September 2023 survey). The research team notes that both are still competing for second place.
"However, this may not prevent Prabowo's victory in the first round of voting on February 14, 2024," wrote the research team in a statement published on the Roy Morgan website on Thursday, February 1st, 2024.
Meanwhile, 3% of respondents remain undecided.
According to the research team's analysis, the choice of vice-presidential candidates has had a clear impact on the current election. Support for Prabowo surged after he chose Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the Mayor of Surakarta and eldest son of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), as his running mate.
"Prabowo's selection of Gibran has weakened support for the PDI-P candidate Ganjar and also reduced the number of Indonesian people who are unable to decide among the three [presidential] candidates," the team stated.
This survey involved 2,561 respondents aged 17 and over, eligible to vote across Indonesia, between October and December 2023. However, the presidential candidate electability survey involved 1,225 respondents.
Face-to-face interviews were conducted in 17 provinces, with efforts made to ensure a balanced sample representative of voters geographically and demographically.
