Based on a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the Indonesian Democracy Index (IDI) reached 79.81 points in 2024.
An IDI above 80 points is categorized as "good." An index between 60-80 points falls into the "moderate" category, while anything below 60 points is considered "poor."
Therefore, the quality of Indonesian democracy in 2024 is categorized as "moderate."
When broken down by region, each Indonesian province has a different IDI.
The highest democracy index in 2024 was in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, at 89.25 points, falling into the "good" category.
The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest national IDI in 2024:
1. Special Region of Yogyakarta: 89.25 points
2. Bali: 88.34 points
3. West Kalimantan: 86.17 points
4. Central Java: 85.84 points
5. Jakarta: 84.99 points

On the other hand, Papua had the lowest national IDI in 2024, at only 56.55 points.
Papua is also the only province with a democracy index categorized as "poor."
In 2024, BPS did not yet calculate the IDI in four new provinces: Southwest Papua, South Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.
It should be noted that the IDI is an indicator showing the level of democratic development in Indonesia. BPS first launched this index in 2009. However, in 2021, the index measurement was revised using a new method.
In the new method, the IDI is measured based on 22 indicators summarized into three main aspects: freedom, equality, and the capacity of democratic institutions.
Some examples of these indicators include guarantees of freedom of assembly, association, expression, opinion, and belief; political rights; press freedom; gender equality; state institution performance; and political education for party cadres.
