The V-Dem Institute also warns that several countries are moving towards autocracy, shifting away from democracy and establishing more authoritarian systems.

"This is a truly global wave of autocratization. Eastern Europe, as well as South and Central Asia, have experienced very sharp declines," the research team wrote.

The liberal democracy index in the V-Dem report uses measurements of liberal (civil-political freedoms) and electoral democracy (free and fair elections) aspects through 71 indicators. The index assesses 179 countries.
