A Kompas Research and Development (Litbang) survey investigated public awareness of local election candidates, including gubernatorial, regency, and mayoral candidates.

The results showed that only 28.4% of respondents knew all the names of gubernatorial, regency, and mayoral candidates.

Furthermore, 16.6% of respondents only knew the names of regency or mayoral candidates. This was followed by 12% who only knew the names of gubernatorial candidates.

Meanwhile, 43% of respondents admitted to not knowing any of the names of local election candidates in their area.

"The KPU, as the election organizer, must acknowledge this relatively low public interest. This condition could potentially affect voter turnout," wrote the Kompas Litbang researcher in their report on Monday, September 23, 2024.

In line with this, Kompas Litbang recorded low public enthusiasm for the local elections. This is evident in the 23.7% of respondents who admitted to never following election news coverage.

The majority, or 57.2% of respondents, only accessed election information at least once a week through various media channels.

"Low public interest in the local elections also affects public understanding of the candidate pairs running in the election," wrote the Kompas Litbang team.

This Kompas Litbang survey involved 536 respondents from 38 provinces, randomly selected from the Kompas Litbang panel, in proportion to the population of each province.

Data collection was conducted from August 19-21, 2024, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.23%, with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
