The General Election Commission (KPU) revealed that 52 former convicts are registered as prospective legislative candidates (bacaleg) for the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in the 2024 General Election.
These individuals were previously imprisoned for various criminal offenses, including corruption.
"We compiled this data based on the Constitutional Court's Decision Number 87/PU-XX/2022, which we technically implemented in KPU Regulation Number 10 of 2023, specifically articles 11 and 12," said KPU Division Head for Technical Matters, Idham Holik, as reported by *Detik.com* on Sunday (27/8/2023).
The Constitutional Court's decision allows former convicts of crimes with sentences of less than five years to become legislative candidates for the DPR/DPRD and DPD.
Legally, they are allowed to run as bacaleg after a five-year waiting period from their release.
Based on party affiliation, the most former convicts are from Golkar, followed by PKB and Nasdem.
The KPU released this data after Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) revealed a list of former corruption convicts who will run as bacaleg.
