LSI Survey: Majority of Citizens Oppose Postponing the 2024 Election

At the end of February 2022, the General Chairperson of the National Awakening Party (PKB), Muhaimin Iskandar, proposed postponing the 2024 General Election by one to two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A number of political experts, legal experts, and academics consider this proposal to be unconstitutional and potentially damaging to democracy.

According to a report by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI), the proposal to postpone the election was also rejected by the majority of citizens.

The LSI survey showed that 65.3% of urban respondents and 62.9% of rural respondents agreed that the 2024 General Election should proceed as scheduled, arguing that leadership changes must still take place even during a pandemic.

On the other hand, only 26.3% of urban respondents and 27.5% of rural respondents wanted the election postponed, arguing that the current president should prioritize handling COVID-19 and economic recovery.

The LSI survey involved 1,197 randomly selected respondents. Respondents came from all provinces, proportionally distributed, and are considered representative of 71% of the national voting population.

This survey has a margin of error of approximately 2.89% at a 95% confidence level.
