The Indonesian research institute Lingkaran Survei Indonesia (LSI) Denny JA released a survey on the popularity of figures frequently discussed as potential vice-presidential candidates (cawapres) for the 2024 General Election.
The results show Gibran Rakabuming Raka ranking first as the most popular potential vice-presidential candidate. 66.5% of respondents claimed to have heard of or known the son of President Joko Widodo.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir, was known by only 61.8% of respondents.
Below them are Airlangga Hartarto and Muhaimin Iskandar, known by 52.3% and 43.1% of respondents, respectively.
"The iron law of our electoral democracy is that people are unlikely to vote for a (presidential/vice-presidential) candidate if they don't know them. But even knowing them doesn't guarantee they will be chosen if they are disliked," said LSI Denny JA researcher Ardian Sopa at a press conference on Monday (August 14, 2023).
LSI Denny JA also conducted a survey on the respondents' level of liking for the four potential vice-presidential candidates.
Gibran still topped the list, liked by 82.6% of respondents. He was followed by Erick Thohir (77.1%), Muhaimin (62%), and Airlangga (52.5%).
Despite being widely liked, Gibran's path to becoming a vice-presidential candidate is currently hindered by Article 169, letter q, of the Election Law, which stipulates that presidential and vice-presidential candidates must be at least 40 years old.
This survey by LSI Denny JA involved 1,200 respondents from various regions of Indonesia. The sample was selected using a multistage random sampling method.
Data collection was conducted from July 3-15, 2023, using face-to-face interviews with questionnaires. The survey has a margin of error of approximately 2.9% and a 95% confidence level.
