How Does the Public View Democratic Practices in Indonesia? Results from a Polling Institute Survey

The Polling Institute research institution compiled public perceptions regarding democratic practices in Indonesia, November 2023 edition.

Survey results show that a majority, or 60.4% of respondents, reported satisfaction with democratic practices in the country. This includes 6.9% who responded "very satisfied" and 53.5% who stated "satisfied."

Polling Institute researcher Kennedy Muslim stated that this figure is up approximately 9% from the previous national survey.

"Precisely amidst the intense attacks on democracy-related issues against one of the presidential candidates, public satisfaction with the implementation of democracy has actually increased," said Kennedy via a virtual press conference on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

Conversely, 34.5% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of democracy in Indonesia. This proportion consists of 28.4% who rated it "somewhat dissatisfied" and 6.1% who rated it "very dissatisfied."

This survey involved 1,496 respondents aged 17 years and older, or those who are married and own a telephone, representing approximately 83% of the total national population. The sample was selected using random digit dialing (RDD).

Data collection was conducted from November 15-17, 2023, using telephone interviews by trained interviewers. The survey has a margin of error of 2.6% at a 95% confidence level, assuming simple random sampling.
