Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 100 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 7:18 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 10 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 100 meters above the peak or 1,684 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 134 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 11, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14.8-37 millimeters and durations of 190-478 seconds.

Then, there was 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 27 seconds, and 1 low-frequency quake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 43 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 3-kilometer radius in the northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 671 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (229 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 99 times.
