Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning (Tuesday, April 23, 2024)

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 09:41 WIT. This is the third eruption in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 1,200 meters above the peak (2,287 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 27 millimeters and a duration of 51.41 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dukono's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 23, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 5 millimeters and a duration of 34.15 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 6 millimeters, s-p 3.56 seconds, and a duration of 20.06 seconds; and 9 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-34 millimeters, s-p 10.07-62.38 seconds, and durations of 51.33-143.46 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists to refrain from activities, climbing, and approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 572 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (184 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 15 times.
