Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 1,500 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 08:39 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This marks the second eruption in the last week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to reach approximately 1,500 meters above the peak, or 4,391 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and a duration of 54 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB on March 27, 2024, showed 1 eruption/explosion with an amplitude of 30.7 millimeters and a duration of 105 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 tremor with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters and a duration of 25 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 8.5 millimeters and a duration of 24 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers/visitors/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 438 volcanic eruptions/explosions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions, with 145 recorded events.
