Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, April 21, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 10:53 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 12 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, no visual eruption was observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations from April 21, 2024, 00:00-06:00 WIB, showed 9 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 62-133 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 33-38 seconds, and 2 deep volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 12 millimeters, s-p 3.8-4 seconds, and durations of 17-22 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river edge) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 565 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 184 recorded events.
