Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height 2,000 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 7:23 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 2,000 meters above the peak or 3,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 121 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 27, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 13 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 25-80 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 46 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 10-45 seconds, and 120 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 8-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 441 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (146 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 50 times.
