Mount Semeru Erupts on Monday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 2:05 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on April 29, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB showed 6 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 65-151 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 emission quakes with amplitudes of 6 millimeters and durations of 28-111 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 10 millimeters, S-P 24 seconds, and a duration of 53 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lahars up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 597 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 199 eruptions.
